a backstage pass to see the baby…

I’ve taken quite a few maternity and newborn photos over the years. And I’ve grown to really appreciate what a unique privilege it is to be allowed into a family’s life at this exciting, but often private time. When it comes to newborn photography, I could set up a studio in my own home, or we could go out on location somewhere in nature – I’ve had quite a few clients do both over the years. But I think my favorite place to take newborn photos is at home.

No stress of bringing everything with you. No need to wear shoes if you don’t want to. No worries about too much sun or wind or a safe surface to lay the baby down. And I also try to emphasize that it’s okay if everything isn’t perfect. You don’t have to live in a studio to have photos taken at home. I can create a studio from what you have. In fact I love doing that as I think that makes each session all the more unique.

In this case, we weren’t just photographing a baby’s face. We were capturing the memory of what the room looked like at this point in time. What the parents looked like. The dog standing by. So many things will change as he grows up and parents are often too in the moment with their newborn to think about stepping back to take in the whole scene. This kind of session is personal and I try to capture that connection – that reality.

Dick joined me on this session and took a few behind-the-scenes photos that I thought were fun and captured the mood.
